Coney Mountain

View from Coney Mountain

One of the best short hikes in the Adirondacks. This 2.2 mile round trip offers an outstanding 360 degree view.

Directions From Long Lake, drive north on Route 30 towards Tupper Lake. After about 12 miles watch for the DEC sign and parking lot on the right. The lot holds 6 to 8 cars and many people park on the shoulder of the highway.
Difficulty Easy. The round trip distance is 2.2 miles with 500 feet of elevation gain.
Family-Friendly This is among the best family hikes in the Adirondacks. There is a short moderately steep stretch just before the top but, this trail is generally easy the whole way.
Winter The Coney Mountain trail is so popular that you will usually find the trail well-packed.
One Thing to Know Coney Mountain was one the triangulation points used during the first survey of the Adirondacks in the 1880s. Verplanck Colvin and his survey crew cleared the top of the mountain and installed a mirrored tower that could be sighted from other triangulation peaks.

Coney Mountain is about as easy as a mountain hike can be. And the reward - an open summit with an expansive 360 degree view - is simply outstanding. The views stretch from Goodman Mountain and Mt. Morris to the north, the High Peaks to the east, the mountains that border Long Lake to the south, and the vast Adirondack lake country to the west.

The only drawback is that Coney is a very popular hike. The off-highway parking lot holds 8-10 cars but, on a nice summer weekend, expect to find cars parked along the highway as well. You can avoid the crowds by getting an early start or by hiking the mountain on a weekday.
